I was thinking of buying myself a new toy for Christmas, a drone. Now I don't want to go spying or firing missiles off (though I could think of a few targets) I just want something to have a bit of fun with that can take some pictures. Does anyone have one or any experiences ?
I should add that I know nothing about drones whatsoever.

Not thought about that. Towards the bottom end probably as I just want a bit of fun and see how it goes. One of my grandsons got one last Christmas, I think he lost it a few days later in someone's garden and never got it back.

You want to try and get one that tracks you, saw some amazing tracking shots of a guy on a motorcycle in Norway

There is a huge difference in prices. I have a DJI Mavic Pro which with the extra batteries is around £1200, or at the toy end of the spectrum, you have drones like this:

I have one of these and they are kinda fun, but you'll only get around 5min flight time out of a battery and the camera is very basic.

The DJI Spark is very well thought of, although it is still very expensive, it is half the price of the DJI Mavic Pro

Drones scare the crap out of me. I spend a lot of time low flying and there are so many people out there who have no idea about the rules and regulations of the air. I am just waiting for the day I have a collision or near miss with one and hope I walk away from it :poop::cold_sweat::cold_sweat:

The DJI Mavic Pro has got a ceiling of 120m and it has software built in that stop you flying it in places you don't have permission, it is quite clever.... although like you say, people aren't, I had someone try hiring me to do some filming, sounded simple enough until I asked him where... the first location was on the flight path for Gatwick airport, all the other locations were for around other airports. When I told him people are not allowed to fly drones in proximity to airports he said he'd just go get himself one and do it anyway! bloody idiots.

:scream::scream: Amazing but not surprising unfortunately. 120m is still 400ft which is the max legal height they can be flown at but doesn't help me when I come around the corner at 50-100ft

you are not allowed to fly drones near airfields, so that shouldn't ever be a problem! :)

Andy if you really want something to fly and have a bit of fun then I think you’d be better off getting a kite ;)

Ahh, should still not be that low unless landing/taking off though surely? My old man is having issues with a helicopter in the village he lives in, he has complained to the CAA that it flies too low and they are looking into it as it is over residential areas. I always believed that if doing any low flying, it had to be prearranged? Even the fast jets in Wales can only do their runs at certain times? :)
(am honestly curious about this as I thought the 120m max height for drones etc was to keep them away from aircraft which should not be flying lower than 120m?)
