It’s a bit like the difference between vlaams, Plattdeutsch and your own more cultured tongue. Whisky/whiskey are Anglicised corruptions of the Gaelic for water (sounds like uish-ga). The Irish speak gaylick and Highland Scots gallic both spelt ‘Gaelic’...... and are closely related. It is thought the original Gaelic speakers immigrated to Scotland from Ireland after the collapse of the Roman Empire. ? Water of Life .......Acquavit........!
