Chain Cleaning

paraffin is cheap as chips!

 

WD40 for convenience but domestic heating oil (kerosene/paraffin) is the cheapest and does everything the ‘cleaner’ does.

 

+1 for paraffin.

 

A grundge brush (or similar) is also a good idea.

 

Standard diesel is also very good for cleaning bike chains.

 

Use an old paintbrush (inch/inch and a half) to apply the cleaning fluid of your choice.
And a manky old T-shirt to mop up/catch any drips/spillages etc, and to dry off the chain.

Look ...... I'm a bloody Yorkshireman! What do you expect? Can't be wasting money tha knaws!!

 

And by far the cheapest! It’s also the oilyest our of paraffin and kerosene so better

 

We wear them to within an inch of their lives and then put them to new and different uses when they start to get like string vests - timing is important here as they must still be in a suitable state to be of further, alternative use.

What a strange idea wearing two t-shirts at the same time is. One at a time is more than enough to keep warm in. Never known it get cold enough to wear two of the buggers at the same time!

Why all the fuss about chain cleaning? Fit a scott oiler and your chain will not need cleaning again plus double the life of your chai.
More time riding ,less time cleaning!!!!

I'm afraid I my diasgree with you, my vfr 800 did over 40,000mls on the chain with a scott oiler fitted and was not at all worn when I sold the bike .In that time the cain was only adjusted 2/3 times and never needed cleaning as the oil is not sticky like the chain sprays and the dirt flings of with the oil as it drips on to the chain.

I’m using one of those loob boy things, (sounds rude) equivalent to scottoiler but Yorkshire priced !!

 

I ordered that exact chain brush from amazon... 1,92 Euros with shipment costs included... it comes from China I seriously have no idea how can they profit from 1,92 Euro... the shipment should be more expensive than that

I was wondering if the parafin gun on a low pressure, say 2-3bar would be suitable to clean a chain. Thinking, quick blast, brush, then another blast?

Or is there a danger of blowing parafin past the seals in the chain?
