looking for a speedmaster engine 2005 865cc carb not efi, garage has informed me mine is terminal has bent valve and needs rebor and it would be cheaper to replace engine I am in north Yorkshire
Hi Janice and welcome A bent valve and a rebore isn’t terminal Could be you’ll find an engine from a breaker on EBay
Hi Janice, before you spend loads of money I would get a second opinion about the engine and it's problems. It's worth knowing that the engine in the Speedmaster is identical to that in an America, so that would give you double the possibilities if you really do need a replacement motor.
Welcome to the forum! You're already getting some good information and hopefully the members can save you some money. After you get this problem sorted out, maybe you can enjoy the humor on the site. I agree with the second opinion when you get into these kinds of problems - unless you've used this garage before and completely trust them. It might help if you throw out the specific 'symptoms' you are having with your bike (e.g. tapping noises, loss of power, won't run over xxx RPM). Something might 'strike' one of the members that have experienced something similar.
hi, I have never used the garage before just happened to break down over road from it, engine stopped just cut out he told me it was the coil and ignition link up which he replaced then plugged it in to diagnostic which said electrics good but engine fault then said we had a bent valve and needed new valve piston rebor and it would be cheaper to replace engine I have got the bike home now the bike has a tapping noise coming from the engine the engine has not been opened I know this because I have painted the bolts black over chrome the paint is not scratched, some say if it had a bent valve it wouldn't run but it runs but backfires when starting and a couple of times flames came out the back which I thought was cool but I know its not right lol some have said it could be cam chain rattle but noise does seem to be coming from under sparkplug or close to it regards jan
Hi Jan, it sure sounds like a valve that's leaking but a bent valve doesn't just happen. I'm not sure what happened prior to you breaking down but would be inclined to first get another opinion. Welcome to the forum by the way!
is there not some fellow forum chap that is near enough to take a look at bike,we wouldn't want you to get ripped off by some garage it may well be repairable with some help.
I share the general instinct here that you have maybe not had the best of service.....there is a world of difference between an electrical fault and a mechanical breakdown and you have allegedly had both....but still no proper diagnosis. Car garage? Maybe does the odd bike but not particularly familiar and does not really want the work? If there are no members local to you able to take a look I would be for having a reputable independent bike shop pick it up to open it up and give you a definitive ‘the problem is’.....you can then decide on your best course of action.
Agree with the above Janice Don’t go back to that garage cos they’re wrong Hopefully it’ll be a simple fix Whereabouts are you as your profile just says UK Don’t post your full address just your area and maybe someone local can help you
Wow, I’d like to meet this “mechanic” who can diagnose a bent valve and that the engine needs a rebore without even opening it up. On the limited information you gave I’d say initially the cut out was caused by an electrical issue, sudden failure like that is mostly electrical. Also was there any loss of power and any rattling just before the engine stopped? If you’ve bent a valve it would sound like you were shaking a can full of marbles prior to cutting out. Does the engine now sound different to before it cut out. You definitely need to get someone who knows bike engines to have a look. What’s the service history like, has the bike done enough miles to need the valve clearance checking and has this been missed . Good luck, even if it is as the mechanic says you should be able to rebuild the engine, after all, the gearbox should be ok so a new head and inspection of the bores should see you right.
that's the great thing about forums helpful like minded folk who are happy to help, ive been there before on the zrx forum one guy in particular went above and beyond restores your faith it does says yoda.
