Hi All, I have had my 1200 Thruxton for three weeks now and it has 364 miles on the clock, in the last couple of days I have noticed a ticking noise at the top end of the engine. Is this normal, I have looked on several Triumph forums and a lot of people seem to have had the same thing occur but no one gives an answer. It is due it's first service in just over a week so I will mention it then just thought some one could set my mind at rest. Thanks in advance Ian.

I've just booked in for my first service and mentioned the "noise" and my dealers workshop tell me a few people have reported this and it appears that it is a problem with a batch of faulty plug caps that are "shorting" and they will replace mine next week at the first service.

It does make sense ! Ear plugs stop specific frequency range's , so if a noise is "outside" that range it stands out ! As you have nothing else to listen to you hear what's left ! This is how the military protect their men , on a rifle range / battlefield you need communication for control and safety. Hearing protection cuts out 90+% of the gun shot blast , but doesn't affect sound in the human vocal range too much (maybe 40-60%) so a shouted command is understood...!

I'm not saying you shouldn't get your bike looked at if the noise is worrying you but I've found it's easy to get paranoid about engine noises, especially when they appear on a new bike, as the engine is run in. As far as the stethoscope goes it takes an experienced ear to use and correctly diagnose a fault with one. The first time I used one it sounded like the engine was falling to bits! My Street Scrambler occasionally makes a loud rattle/tapping sound for a second or so just after starting and has done from new. I've heard a Street Twin do the same and it doesn't worry me in the slightest. I find the engine quite "tappety" compared to the IL4 of the ZZR but still quieter than the big single of the dirt bike so everything is relative. As long as they're running well I'm happy.:)
