Whow, a man after my heart. I want to move to Austria and have looked everyday for two years on cheaper house prices but I’m really not sure of the stability after brexit. Nearly bought a house/barn 2016 but pulled out because of underhand dealing but I’m still ripe for it. The wife on the other hand...........

I have been pondering this thread, thinking about what I could contribute...
Some good advice has been given by the others and this is what I would like to share with you:
Not too long ago, I sometimes thought about my life: How can a man be so content?
I even considered being happy (definitely a rare state of mind).
Mind you, my life wasn’t perfect; not at all. But I loved my job, had more money than I needed (WHAT???), good friends and family.
Then my heart literally caved in, and that was it.
Probably will never work on my job again.
My life was revolving around it though.
Now I sit here, looking at the drab and grey winter sky and do not know what to do with the rest of my life.
Yes, the situation is different to yours, but in the end, we both have to make up our minds about which course to plot in the future.

And I wish you all the wisdom, strength and - most important - good luck on your way to decide what to do; and to see it through.

One more thing: I believe that there is a place on this planet for all of us, that makes us feel that ‚we belong‘.
Like a well tuned guitar: when you found this place, it will vibrate your strings in perfect harmony. This place will touch you so deeply, it can make you cry.

My sentiments entirely! We tried it out rather than talk/wish about it and due to health issues we returned to UK and apart from the weather we do not regret coming back or the experience of living abroad.
Go for it Dill don't be saying I wish I tried that 5 years down the line.

 

Dilli, if you’ve got a dream go for it mate.

Story,,,, back in 1972 my father retired at the age of 62 and bought a new car and a caravan so as both mum and dad could go away as and when they liked. The world was their oyster, get up in the morning the weather looks good, let’s go away.
Life was great that summer.
Mum hadn’t been in the best of health since the mid 1950’s with the big ‘C’
Back to 1972 and in the autumn mum was diagnosed with a brain tumour and she had the op just before Christmas and that’s when everything went pear shaped.
When mum eventually came out of hospital her left eye was permanently closed and she couldn’t move her left arm and left leg.
The hospital tried to advise Dad that mum would be better of in a nursing home but Dad refused saying ‘My wife’s not going into a nursing home I will look after her’ and he did, Dad became mums carer.
Mum lasted 13 years with Dad having to do everything for her as well as running the house.

So Dilli I say again if you’ve got a dream go for it mate as you don’t know what’s waiting for you tomorrow.

I was in Tenerife in early Feb, in some bars they still sell the local Dorada beer for a Euro a pint!

 

Next time go all inclusive mate......... drink yourself into a daze for free!

My advice fwiw, cut your cloth & expectations & do it. We did. Could have gone on working till 60 + & made a lot more money, but the stress prob would have killed me ( if the wife didnt first) Leading an almost stress free life now & loving it. You'll be amazed how little money you actually spend on a day to day basis. Chin up

 

If you want to do it just do it life is too short it's not a dress rehearsal.We have done this already in a way we bought a 3 bedroom townhouse in a small village in Aragon Spain with about 2000 inhabitants about 4 years ago about 75 mins from the coast and tourist areas.House prices a lot cheaper the further inland..We spent quite a lot of time looking into moving to Spain or France.Initially to work then retire but thanks to our eastern european friends its almost impossible to get a job.For a sensible wage anyway.So we bought too retire to instead.We live here for the the summer and return to UK for winter to return to work as I still have another 5 years until official retirement. We can't stay out of UK for more than 183 days a year or we become non resident in UK.It's not expensive to live here compared to UK example equivalent of council tax is €220 a year not quite like the UK's £1600.Over this winter we will tidy up our house in UK sell and go to Spain permanently.

 

It'll never happen.......................

 

Sorry to hear your dreams temporary dashed Dilli. Why not review the situation in a years time and in the meantime keep saving

 

Move up here, half my neighbours dont work, and most have a higher standard of living than I do.Simples, and loads are English, so you wont miss home.
