Hi, I've recently brought my first 1050 on a 05 plate with 17k and it lived up to expectations until 2 weeks after the warranty ran out . It needs new down pipes, chain and sprocket set and rear discs! I've been told by a garage that I have to use genuine parts to repair is this the case? Can someone give me some advice?

Hello Kevin and welcome along to the forum. Since the bike is a few years old now and out of warranty you can put what you want on it. Personally speaking the only genuine Triumph parts i use is the oil filter, things like chains and sprockets aren’t made by Triumph anyway so go for a good quality set like Tsubaki, DID, Renold, have a look on eBay to give you some idea, also wemoto.com are a good source of bits. You might have to cough up for a Brembo disc and the prices can be eye watering so get ready. What’s up with the down pipes, are they so bad they need changing, bit of surface rust will clean up if done properly. They are usually stainless steel so should be ok. Good luck mate.

Thanks pal! I'e been looking around and it seems the prices for the parts from my garage and on the internet don't differ that much. Oh well expensive toys deserve good parts eh?

Just remember, buy cheap you buy twice, spending that little bit more on the right parts will save you in the long run. Enjoy.

The garage where it' been diagnosed says the rear disc is bent! The garage where I brought it did an mot in Nov so I assume the mileage is correct. It' a speed triple. According to the gov website it all looks legit. The new garage where it' been looked at says it wouldn' pass mot now which is a bit strange

simple to check disc if you have a decent stand Abba or similar you could see if its warped, does the mob you bought bike from not seem a better bet as you stated motd only recently.

The down pipes are split apparently, no it doesn' have an abba stand. A second opinion seems like the smart idea I've been quoted 1450 for the repair! The brake, well I'm not sure how accurate the diagnosis is. The fella that looked at it was a triu.ph technician for 20 years apparently. I'm fairly confident of being able to change the down pipes meself but the rest I would prefer a garage to do I think.

It’s only DD that spends all day moaning ;)
Exhaust and disc on that bike will be a simple enough job.
Just need the tools and even if you went out and bought the tools if you didn’t have them it would still be cheaper.

For what’s wrong it’s a rip off. None of those jobs is particularly time consuming.
Think you said it was a sprint you had, the only major time consuming part of it is taking the fairing off but that would only add about an hours labour to the job ( I know I’ve taken one on and off before now )
    Chains and sprockets £100 -150
Rear disc as you saw on wemoto less than a £100
Downpipes on eBay anything from £15 to £100.
So would love to know what they are quoting for
