Hi all, I’m new to biking and have just installed an aftermarket exhaust on my 2012 explorer and have a small amount of popping now. If I remove the baffles will the more popping harm the bike or is it ok to do it. Thanks Dale
Hi Dale and welcome in to the Triumph Asylum. Re the popping on overun, you'll notice it more now that you have a more open exhaust. If you don't like it, the first thing to do is to check for leaks at the joints of the new system. Any air getting in here will cause popping on overun. The second way of reducing this is to remove the SAI (Secondary Air Injection system). This system allows air to enter the exhaust headers to burn off any unburnt fuel (part of the anti-pollution components) under closed throttle and creates popping.
Cheers for all the replies it’s most appreciated. The popping doesn’t bother me as at the moment it’s only a small amount. But just to confirm is it dangerous to remove the baffle to make it louder which will obviously cause more pooping. That’s my main worry Cheers
as said do no harm its personal preference i had twin gpr cans and they made some noise popping like an ak47,ended up i couldn't bear the noise so went to single 3 into 1 just right volume and still popping away if standard downpipes still there it will be fine.

It's not dangerous but it might affect the way the bike runs particularly the fuelling. It may mean your bike runs lean. It is possible to re-map the ECU to take into account the exhaust gas flow changes to ensure optimum running.
The Hangar Lane underpass into London is my personal music hall twice a day when I pass through. Speed Triple with SC Project Conical - no baffle....ear plugs are compulsory
