    Gday all.
Finally got to start reassemble of the T160 (1975 model) and before I put the head back on, I am in two minds whether to fit valve stem seals. I know they didnt originally come fitted, but I'd like to minimize any smoking. Should I put valve stem seals or would they greatly reduce the service live of the Guides/stems? Were the T160's prone to excessive valve guide wear, and hence the lack of seals? Your opinions will be greatly appreciated before I replace the head.
    Cheers.

I think you have answered your own question. You don’t want want blue puffs of smoke especially on the overrun.
Valve stem seals seem to have arrived on these motors with emissions regs, not because they make a marked difference. I think it is a fairly marginal decision either way and you haven’t indicated if everything is new, likely use and mileage, use of synthetic oil etc.
In short; there is no right or wrong answer and I would probably flip a coin! I very much doubt it will have any meaningful impact on valve stem/guide life.

Thanks for the response. I haven't had much(or any) experience with Triumphs in the past, so I guess the amount they smoke without valve seals and premature wear with them would be the deciding factor for me. The head has been rebuilt with new valves and guides and i will be running 20W/50 mineral oil. If the T160 run fine without excessive smoking then I would prefer to run without seals, but it's hard for me to gauge how badly it will smoke.
the last time the head was rebuilt, it had seals installed and when we stripped it down this time the valves and guides were badly worn, so that is what is making me think that it will suffer premature wear with seals installed.
I'm wondering what other peoples experience and opinions are?

Got seals fitted to mine and it still smokes...mind you they are old and probably need replacing to do any real good.

Unless the valve guides are made for seals then you're probably wasting your time & money as the seals will likely migrate up the valve stems due to the lack of location groove on the valve guide outer surface.

Most replacement guides come machined with a grove for locating seals, I know the Hyde kits do.
But it has been known for oil to get past the guide and head.
