Newish here but no rookie. Last September got my TTR and have enjoyed it. Ticks all the right boxes having gone lighter and more retro cafe style than sooo many bikes in the past. Well, three weeks ago the immoblizer/alarm would not go off thus no start. Dealership after 2 days was able to replicate the no start. It's been in the shop awaiting a complete new ignition including ignition and new keys. Finally after getting Triumph North America involved shop called yesterday to say parts are nearly here. Now I know thousands of newer bikes have been sold with this immoblizer, dealership said this is the first one that they know of that has failed. I'm thinking and a little concerned that should this happen in the future is there a way to by pass the ignition ( apparently the sensor in the ignition did not recognize the chip in either key telling the ecu it's ok to start) and not leave me stranded. Btw, this is not the older style alarm that could be put in sleep mode with a data tool. Not sure about the rules over there but here in the US all vehicles are mandated to have an immoblizer, backup camera and other nanny stuff to save ourselves from certain destruction.

Before I got my Thrux R I had a Tiger 800 which suffered from occasional non starts, long story short, just out of warranty I needed a new key which was more or less unusable, local dealer (who supplied and serviced my bike from new and supplied the new key) told me the immobiliser was suspect and needed to be changed.
As I had mentioned the occasional non starts to them during warranty (which they were never able to reproduce) they lodged an out-of-warranty claim with Triumph. Upshot was that Triumph supplied an new immobiliser and keys, but I had to pay to have them fitted, and of course the new key didn't fit the luggage.

Over the whole period I heard of several other Tigers with immobiliser issues.

I'm hoping we don't get the same issue with the Thrux. I don't know if there is any similarity between the Thrux immobiliser and the Tiger one.

So, after 3 weeks they called to say they had the new immoblizer and should be complete by tomorrow. I asked my SA who said Triumph really doesn't know what the real issue is , possibly a few bad ones. Time will tell. I Am just a little leery that there is no definitive reason it failed.

Personally I have had no issues at all with a dealer fitted from new Datatool S4 on my 2012 Bonnie.
But there was recently a major re-call on certain newer models (loads of examples on the forum)
There are dozens of instances on forums where riders have been stranded particularly near large electrical pylons etc.
When they are good they are good, just be aware like with all electronics they can play up.

I had a Datool Immobiliser on my 2001 Bonnie and found it a real pain. So the dealer removed it and since then I've either declined fitting one or removed them from all my Triumphs.

Why? There are too many reports of "issues" and just as importantly, based on where I live most insurers don't offer a discount on top of the one they have for a Datatag and Disk Lock.
