Hi Viz Recommendations

It's a purely personal choice wearing hi-viz.
If it makes you feel safer and more confident on the roads wear it. When You get home safe you always tell yourself it must have helped and it possibly has.
I normally wear mine on all motorway trips and throughout the winter.
You can see the hi-viz miles away, but believe me there are still twats who do not see it and will try and knock you off changing lanes etc.
Treat all other road users as complete imbeciles and keep yourself as safe as you can.

 

when im driving on the motorways I always spot the high viz before the bike, wont help the ones that dart inbetween lanes at high speed unless they know exactly when youre going to check your mirrors

 

Point being that between cars the high viz sticks out before a black jacket or bike, but thanks for your constructive criticism! I'll give you the benefit of doubt as someone with a sense of humour rather than a twat

 

Anything that you can do to try be a little more visible, is a plus in the war with distracted cagers. More so now with the cell phones.

To be honest I think that there is little we, as bikers, can do. Whether we like it or not, the human brain works in a certain way - we don't see things, we look for things. Cognitive theory. As a result if we don't look for a specific thing, we just don't see it even when it there in full view.

So when a cager is at a junction waiting to join a major road, if that cagers' brain hasn't been programmed to look for bikes, they just won't see them, no matter what you're wearing. Unfortunately the current situation is that they are programmed to see things that will threaten/impact on them - cars buses, lorries etc - not bikes.

This is why we need to acknowledge that it is our responsibility to protect ourselves, but our actions won't re-program that cagers brain.

 

'Cagers' is a new term to me but makes sense. My focus is always on A and B pillars. If you can't see the driver he can't see you. Ditto truck mirrors.

So I suspect that makes most of us on this site Cagers .......

I drove a company car & van for over 40 years as a Field Service Engineer, couldny get all the tools I needed to do my job on a bike.

I ride a BMW R1100RT which is predominantly black but with added Hi - Vis markings and extra lights because I like to make the greatest effort to be seen, I also wear a Hi- Vis with sleeves and a white helmet, I love going home at the end of my days riding.

However I started riding bikes at 17 and I'm still riding them now at 62. I think being on the road long term on a regular basis has actually improved my awareness of other vehicles on the road.

I have takes Advanced riding courses over that period of time and rode a blood bike on a weekly basis over the last 2 years of that time too.

Whats your experience ?

I think your attitude needs a little adjustment towards the very good people on this site.

How long were you away from bikes.
10, 20 years ?
Me, 38 years continuous riding experience.
I ride all year, every year and cover between 10,000 to 15,000 miles PA.
I have never used HI VIz, preferring instead to rely on sound defensive riding skills.
Back to my question.
Should HI VIZ be made compulsory.
What do you think.

Wearing a Hi Vis is a Sound Definsive Technique. That's why the police wear them - to be seen.

Yup definitely hi viz head to toe also think bikes made from 2018 should emit a high pitched whine when in built up areas, unless the rider produces his own already!!

 

I rather fancy one of these suites as my next purchase.
