At one time I think Triumph fitted the R version of the Speed Triple with PVM forged alloy wheels (or maybe they were an option).

As we know, the current model comes with run-of-the-mill cast wheels and I wondering if anybody had fitted lighter forged alloy or carbon wheels and if so which ones and was there a noticeable handling benefit?

I had a Fireblade before the Speed Triple and had Galespeed forged aluminium wheels fitted and the handling, acceleration and braking was definitely better all round.

I'm not sure if I trust carbon fibre wheels on the road (although they're probably fine) and I'm thinking about getting OZ Piega forged wheels.

Any views or comments? Are they wasted on a naked bike which will rarely see any track action?

    Cheers

Definitely lust after a set of PVM's myself. Only seen one set of carbons on a Speed which visually looked a bit heavy/clumsy on the rear single sided.

    Hi
I have PVM forged on my 2012 R-bought it second hand and they were already fitted.
Haven't ridden cast and forged back to back but whilst my bike handles beautifully I'm not sure I can tell it's all about the wheels as it has Ohlins front and rear too.
My previous bike was an 04 Aprilia Tuono and the difference in the two bikes handling is like night and day.
I would say if you can afford it then go for it (and why not) but it maybe not the nirvana it seems.
    Cheers

Lighter wheels would be awesome and as Sprinter said, they are a GREAT mod. However, one of the reasons why I love my Speed so much is her looks and I still haven't seen a pair of carbon wheels that are as good looking as the stock ones. For now and on this bike performance is not much of a priority for me. If I wanted performance I think I would probably have bought another bike.

i have the bst carbon wheels on my speed. they have been on for 12 months, no issues with the carbon.... does handle better... spins up faster, brakes harder, turn ins are superior to standard. weighs a lot less. look superb. IMAG0350.jpg

Guess the question to ask is what do you want the bike to do that it doesn't do already. Go faster? Turn in quicker? Bring the overall weight down? Forged or carbon will do this for you.... At a cost, but if any of the above apply then save your money (£1500-2000?) and buy another second hand sports bike that will out perform the triple as you already know. (Don't get me wrong I love my triple) If its just for looks then you gotta go carbon, just have a look at anthony gothards pic it looks sweet as!!!!! But another point is, I had a very near miss a good few years ago on a gsxr1000 which involved a pothole/crater at high speed, luckily it only put a flat spot into my rear wheel on one side about 10cm long (it was flat, to this day I still dont understand how the tyre bead didn't let go), my mate wasn't so lucky tho, he ended up with two cracked vertebra and a written off R1. I had the wheel re rolled and its as good as new now! U aint doin that with carbon and I'm not sure it can be done with forged as the process makes them more brittle, hence they split, but I do stand to be corrected on that. If you want your bike to go faster spend your money on a quick shifter, "low mount" exhaust and get rid of the cat!

I'd love to be a motorcycle journalist, just think, you never have to pay out of your own pocket for the single best mod you can do to a bike!

Quite correct. It's a quickie bike but I love it for its quality and looks. I have a tuned mt10 sp for when I want to be mental.

Well, I already have a commuter bike for urban stuff and I've had many sportsbikes over the years. I sold a Fireblade before I bought the Speed Triple because I didn't want to put up with the relatively extreme riding position.

So yes, the answer is I'd like better handling and acceleration. I already have a quickshifter and low mount exhaust!

Thanks for all the advice from everybody. I'm going to seriously think about getting the OZ Piega forged wheels...I'll post up pics and a review if it happens!
