i purchased my 900 thruxton on the 27/6/15,i had the 12 month service carried out with 2092 mile's on the clock, it's now due the 2nd yearly service,it now has a mere 3500 miles on the clock,i went to the dealer's to book it in,i was quoted a price of £199 for the service!!!!! i explained that it's only covered about 1500 miles since the last service,i understand that oil deteriorate's over time,i was advised to try & cover the 6000 miles a year.it look's like a rip off to me,however,i managed to bite my tongue & booked it in.

Your oil will be just fine, as will the filter......and air filter. The 'annual' service is a nice little earner but completely unnecessary at your sort of mileages. A synthetic oil will need changing after 6,000 miles but not otherwise on its first birthday. This service is well within the scope of the most cack-handed diy-er. Buy a manual and write up your own services in the book. If you want to be 'by the book' the oil and filter will cost you £50. The air filter can stay put. Everything else is an inspection check and the chancesof the throttle bodies being significantly out of synch are minimal.....and it would be noticeable.
Me? I'd write up the 12 month service items on my own A4 form and tick them off before filing it with the vehicle docs.

The one thing I would do is add a little silicone grease to the expletive deleted sidestand swith.

After reading your post, I thought I'd better check out the sidestand switch during my dinner break today.
I found it shittened up to buggery and corrosion forming round the exposed actuator pin.
Gave it a bloody good clean and then applied red rubber grease.
Only trouble being, I couldn't stop cleaning then and finished up cleaning both stands, swinging arm, frame tubes and owt else on the underside of the bike.
Feel better for it now though!

Service costs are ridiculous at main dealerships. Think the hourly cost is in the region of £55 p/h oop north, and most probably dearer darn sarf.

The one that really gets my goat is the valve check. Fair enough if it's being done on mileage, but it's when they say it's due but the bikes only done minimal mileage to the point where they can't be worn enough to require adjustment.

I get that oil deteriorates over time (damn sight longer than twelve months though) but having valve clearances checked on time is just theft if you ask me. How can valve clearances wear and change when the engines not running? They rely on the fact that not everyone knows this, along with the assumption your warranty will still be honoured.

Its gone belly up down in Sussex since Clive Wood moved from Bognor to Lincolnshire. But he is amazed how many of his old customers still travel up to him and he puts them up overnight. They use it like a mini hols and get their bike done at the same time.
btw would be worth doing your brake fluid.
