Yeah sorry Mick my lack of understanding which led to the confusion. I've just read this little article on screw threads which is more interesting than you might think!

So my diagram was trying to show that the distance between the top (crest) of the pitch seems to be slightly bigger on the new cap.

On closer inspection of the two just now the thread angle also looks a little different  either way it's wrong, doesn't fit and will have to go back.

I'd already sent them an email Crispey. I've a double hernia op early tomorrow morning so at least they'll get the email before i'm back in action and back on the bike! :)

Possibly. Probably. Shame as it looks and feels very good quality and I like it, but if it doesn't fit ....

    Good on yer Sean!
It's all worth knowing when you have a bike!
It has probably helped in your understanding of the potential problem.

Surgery a success! Dr repaired 3 hernial tears (fun pain). Superman is on the mend..

    Good luck Thruccy.

    Ha! Thanks :p

  8. Glad you got it undone and without damaging it too. The grips I was referring to are these: https://www.raygrahams.com/products...spx?pv=55681&gclid=cid32i7x3dmcfue17qodxpeaqw
I use them all the time, mole grips are useful too but these have a much wider range of applications imo.
The new cap looks like a larger pitch thread so you did right but not trying to do it up further.
As for the 50p, put it on the road, hammer it flat, buy Curly Wurley

    Cheers Oscar,

Since getting this bike I'm gradually going through my tool box and trying to acquire all the correct tools whilst ridding it of crap. Mole grips and those pliers are on the pick-up list.

The 50p will meet mr hammer later!

My toolbox looks like scrap and I think I'm the best mechanic at work!
A distinct lack of interest and the ability to be easily distracted
means I usually get left to my own devices
DILLIGAF by name and by nature
It's on my work tool box

Neat looking toolbox that dilligaf, it has drawers and tote boxes! Most impressed!
I take it there's a strong Sunderland v Newcastle rivalry going on in your workshop.

Stops folk borrowing and pinching stuff, always leave a few strategically sharp bits in there as well for good measure, just don't forget where you put them when you're rummaging yourself.

Since I started there 4yrs ago Sunderland won 6 in a row drew 1 lost 0 against Newcastle
Even this season we've always been at least one place above them
    All changes now though

I went up to Sunderland years ago to watch Chelsea play your lot. Took forever to get there, we were 4-0 down by half time AND I was sat in with the home crowd

I left at half time :)
