Chain adjustments C spanner

i was just thinking that myself,i adjusted the chain on mine for the first time the other day and that C spanner is crap

 

I have heard others say they use a blunt long flat screwdriver and a rubber mallet...

 

that's what i ended up doing..i could loosen the chain with the c spanner but i gave up trying to tighten it with it

In my owners hand book they say the slack should be 21-30mm, but i noticed in the workshop manual some of the the speed triples are 30-40mm,not sure why that would be?

 

my work shop manual covers from 2011 up until the new model came out it just seems weird that they are quoting 30mm-40mm for some and 21mm-30mm for others in the manual, i didn't think there was any difference between a 2011 and mine which is a 2014

 

Look for underboat96 on eBay. That's who I bought mine off when I had the sprint GT.

Yeah, that's the one I posted a link to before.

The spanner is high-quality and the long handle gives better leverage.

 

Amount of chain slack required is dictated by geometry/relative position of drive sprocket - swing arm pivot - suspension travel. So differs from bike to bike.

 

Didn't look at the link. I agree the spanner is good quality. Handle is a good size not too long that if you were on a long trip that you can't take it with you.
Certainly does the job better than the one you get with the tool kit.

I suspect I'll miss the way the handle falls apart just as I get the toolkit version into position

 

Re chain tension Triumph need more than most due to the relative positions of output shaft to swing arm pivot to rear spindle.
Best is to start with about 25 -30mm of slack get someone to sit on the bike(heavier the better) and then see if you still have some slack. Push down on the rear as much as possible also.
A chain that is tight will do an awful lot of damage.
At the TT one year noticed a bike that the chain was like a bow string (Kawasaki ZX7R). 1st lap over Ballaugh bridge the engine was pulled in 1/2 at the output shaft.
That's the worst case but can certainly wear out chains etc very quickly
Btw my streetona (96) needs a good 40mm
