Scottoiler...

Well he commutes on his m/bike and races his Suzuki so does have some practical experience. I should have mentioned he did say if you're going to use an oiler best not to use the vacuum type on the two new bikes I have. I didn't get in to the why's and wherefores of that. Maybe he had in mind what t552 heard. Next time I'm in I'll quiz the Service Manager about that and ask him to ask Triumph. I'd rather be reassured before fitting my oilers.

 

Which part of that information qualifies him to talk bollocks about Scottoiler systems ?

 

Got a Scotoiler on my Tiger 800.

I got it for free with fitting by the dealer when I bought the bike new, was part of the deal

I've had them on a number of bikes over the years and never had any problems.

 

Bought from a Triumph dealer and fitted by one of their technicians no doubt.

There doesn't appear to be any standard information between Triumph dealers throughout the UK regarding this.
All I can say is the Scottoiler works fine on my Bonnie EFI with the vacuum pipe on the brass 90 degree pipe on the left hand carb body.
No loss in performance, just a nicely regulated oiled chain.

 

Blimey, I'm not going to get in to a pissing match here, just saying he knows bikes and bikers.

Rich, it's the V system mate.

The only thing is with the Tiger is that Mr scotoiler doesn't recommend using the twin nozzle, just the single nozzle. Don't know why perhaps a phone call to them will explain.
Even with the single nozzle feeding the outside link plate of the chain is good enough in my experience and oil does get to the inside link plate due to centrifugal forces.

I was in Pure Triumph Wellingborough today and asked the service team there for the skinny (the chap at Woburn is new-ish so may not have the full low down, and they don't sell Scottoilers unlike Wellingborough who do). It seems as part of their training technicians are told that under no circumstances should they fit the Scottoiler V System to a modern Triumph because it could feck up a whole bunch of important stuff. If you must have one, then fit the E System no matter what Scottoiler HQ might say to the contrary, or so says the official word out of Triumph at least.

So it seems the sales guy at Woburn had it right after all.

 

From my experience and that's not hear say by a third party, the V system is OK.
Fitted at Staffordshire Triumph by their factory trained technicians and as I said earlier I've not had any problems with the Scotoiler or with my Tiger 800xc that can be related to the Scotoiler.

So from my experience that blows the above quote out of the water

hi guys, I have had scotoilers v system on all of my chain driven bikes since they first became available that's including five Hinkley triumphs with no issues and extended chain life. once set up correctly no maintainence except the occassional refill, I get about 800 miles to each refill hope this helps regards to all

 

Rather than rely on anecdotal evidence I wrote to Triumph via their FB page. This is the response:

"Hi Richard, Wellingborough are correct, From a manufacturers stance, we only advise that Scottoiler E systems are fitted to our bikes. The electronic versions are guaranteed to have no impact on the fueling and map sensors which can be affected when you have to tap into them to fit the Vacuum systems. It is the owners choice though which system they want to be fitted but it just makes things complicated if a running issue was to occur post fitting so we always only recommend the E systems. Regards Triumph UK"

I've sent a follow-up asking if the warranty would be affected. Whatever, based on that response I'll be selling the Scottoiler V Systems I bought. Any takers before I stick them on Ebay? They're brand new, still boxed, lots of satisfied customers. 20% off retail.

Seems the info I had received has been correct. And the reasons for it.

 

Spoke to Mr Scotoiler @ the MCN event in Edinburgh this weekend can you guess what he said.
When I mention that Triumph "do not recommend" Scotoilers, he said " they do not recommend aftermarket exhausts ,or different tyres, or brake pads.

He addressed the issue of upsetting the vacuum by saying that because of new laws re emissions, Triumph are running a petrol tank heat evaporation, collection and charcoal storage device that runs off the vacuum pipe and is many times stronger and so ,:- " Why does this not upset the balance of the system?"

He seemed to have heard it all before and would have no hesitation in installing, I must say mine works really well.

He also recommends wiping your chain with an oily rag on occasion, which sounds like sensible stuff to me.
